FISHING

Fishing licences can be obtained from O'Neill's at 6 Plunkett Street. Licences are needed for fishing for sea trout and salmon. They cost between £3 and £25. If fishing in a privately owned lake or river a permit is also required from the owner. O'Neill's also arranges boats and gillies and supplies tackle and bait. Fishing trips also arranged through Castlelough Tours at O'Connor's Pub in High Street.

The River Flesk drains the West Cork mountains and runs into Lough Leane. It has trout and spring salmon. All methods of fishing are allowed. The River Laune drains the Killarney lakes and is excellent for salmon, sea trout and brown trout.

Barfinny Lake is about 10 miles/17km south of Killarney on the road to Sneem. Take the Kenmare road out of Killarney and look for a left turn at Molly's Gap. It is stocked annually with rainbow trout. Worms, spinners and flies are allowed. Lough Leane, Muckross Lake and Upper Lake have both salmon and trout and tolling for salmon is popular. A boat and gillie would cost about £50 for a day.
